End Of Day 6: Waites Run at Wilson Cove

Trip Miles to Date: 89
This afternoon we traversed the high ridge of Great North Mountain. The weather teased us with periodic offerings of sun. It felt so delicious, then it would duck behind a cloud and we’d scramble for our jackets. After a brief shower at lunch, the sun reappeared only to be replaced by an ominous dark cloud, which lurked behind Fruitcake when Nutz snapped her picture. Soon this cloud began pelting us with frozen rain, preventing any more photography from the ridgeline.
Great North Mountain is a spectacular hike, even better without ice pellets stinging your face. You can see far off across the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. The path down from the ridge reminded me of Vermont’s Long Trail, because the hiker must be vigilant and carefully place each foot amid the wet, slippery rocks and roots. In addition there were a number of blow downs in the first mile south of the Paul Gerhard shelter. Still, we made decent time to this evening’s camp. It looks like the weather may cooperate with our doing a bit of clothes washing.
