Trip Miles to Date: 102

The day began at our camp on Waites Run where, we later read: “You are to avoid taking water because of the cows upstream.” Oh, well. We filtered it.

Again, the day started cold, in the 30s. We are getting tired of this. This is no way to train for desert heat on the Pacific Crest Trail.

We climbed up over Sugar Knob at 3000 feet, where once on a snowshoe trip we stayed in the PATC cabin. It did occur to us that this is Friday the 13th, and we took extra care on the 8 stream crossings, often an easy place to slip and fall. Not that we are superstitious or anything. We managed them all without incident. Late in the afternoon, we reached the ridgeline of Little North Mountain, with panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley below us to the east.

We will walk across the valley tomorrow, hoping for access to a small grocery store, as we are running low on food. Our bodies - trying to stay warm - have demanded more calories this week. With a chilly wind blowing much of the time, it has felt like March instead of April. We were happy to have the sun in a cloudless sky late today, but that wind persists!

Nutz is now snoring in the tent beside me. I think I’ll join him. Good night!
